Just a short mail call from the officers’ club aboard the Starship GENESIS two-seven. While spending some time trying to get inter-stellar A.M. radio to pick up the live Indians – Tigers game in Detroit, The Passenger had the opportunity to regale himself with some old DVD’s of one of his favorite television shows from the 1970’s. One particular part of an episode caught my attention.
In a vintage M*A*S*H episode, in a twist of certain odd-prognostication, Patrick Swayze played an injured soldier who was told he had cancer. In a stress filled environment, Father Mulcahy was feeling sorry for himself and angry at all those around him he felt were the source of his trouble. When he came to know Swayze’s character and how he cared more about staying to be with his friend than leaving for his own treatment it brought the cleric to his spiritual knees. In explaining his epiphany, the good Father told the camp, assembled for morning mass this paraphrased statement, ‘God created us not for the pat on the back but so that He could be here, He could live through the people He created in His image.’
The short video repast reminded me of an incredibly special phone call I had just the day before. It came from a sweet young lady who is a Passenger herself upon a Genesis starship of her own. Although Lady L has every reason to focus completely upon her own voyage, she instead reaches out to this Passenger to extend herself to be an encouragement. It was the television Father’s statement about how God has us here so that He is here, living through His creation that caught my attention. The simple acts of kindness, of love, of reaching out a hand to those who you know need that touch are faith in action. Should our two Genesis starships ever dock at the same port, Lady L will receive a visit from This Passenger, just to say, ‘Hi!’ If she happens to read this, may she know that she was just the encouragement I needed at just the right time.
Also, one more quick note for our our Star-traveler who was docked at Children’s so long. Although home, tomorrow, Tuesday the 25th, she begins her first infusion therapy back at Children’s. Your prayers for Ally will be greatly appreciated!!
